The Rehoming Project’s goal is to reduce over-crowding at shelters, rescues, and senior pet sanctuaries throughout the United States, especially at kill facilities; to reduce the number of senior pets who are surrendered to these facilities; to increase awareness about responsible rehoming; and to increase the likelihood of successful placement of senior pets whose current owners can no longer care for them. With rehoming, pets remain in the homes they are accustomed to while their owners advocate on their behalf to find a new home for their pet.

This year-long program is designed to promote awareness that rehoming is more responsible than surrendering a pet to a shelter, and the goal is to reduce some of the 6.5 million animals that are surrendered to shelters each year.

If you can no longer take care of your pet and are considering euthanizing or surrendering your pet, please consider rehoming your pet instead. There are many animal lovers who may consider adopting your pet. With rehoming, you keep your pet with you and care for your pet while you wait for someone to adopt them.

Keep Senior Pets Safe Initiative

The Elderly Pet Organization works with our sponsor and partner Fi to distribute FREE Fi Nano microchip kits to senior pets. Only 5% of dogs are microchipped in the United States. Senior pets including both cats and dogs, are especially vulnerable because as they age, they may develop dementia or cognitive disfunction which could lead to them escaping and wandering off. A microchip can help ensure your pet’s safe return. We distribute these microchips at no cost to pet owners.

Pet Care Packages for Senior Pet Adoptions

Senior Pet Care Packages provides basic care necessities to at risk senior pets who are newly adopted. Through generous sponsor donations of pet bedding, pet grooming supplies, pet food and treats, pet supplements, pet toys, and free microchips, these pet care packages are distributed to new senior pet adoptees who exhibit financial need. Due to the overwhelming number of applications we receive, this program is limited to first come first served. Care package contents may vary depending on inventory available at the time of application. Proof of adoption and adoption receipt required.

Pet Insurance Grants

The Elderly Pet Organization is proud to offer pet insurance grants to owners of senior pets whose pets are eligible for pet insurance, but they have a financial need for support to help pay for pet insurance for their pet. The Pet Insurance grants initiative is open to individuals who are looking to purchase pet insurance for their older pet, but who have limited financial resources to cover the costs.

Adopt-a-dog month

Each October the Elderly Pet Organization launches a promotional awareness campaign through a variety of outreach efforts, this program is designed to help some of the estimated 3.3 million dogs who are surrendered to shelters each year. Senior pets are vulnerable to unnecessary euthanization especially if they are unwell or older, and often overlooked for adoption.

Our outreach campaign is designed to promote awareness about senior pets who are waiting in shelters, and to encourage people to consider adopting a senior pet, whose many benefits make senior pets ideal for certain situations. Through our relationship with Adopt-a-Pet.com, we actively work to promote senior pet adoption and introduce prospective adoptees to dogs in the area waiting for adoption.
